A close up look at my Go-Box layout

A close up look at my go box layout. No discussion of the radio itself though. The main focus is just on the layout and why I went the directions that I did. Please be sure to visit www.spectergear.com/ Your patronage there helps support this channel. The case, by the way, is the Apache 2800. I was way off on the number. I was thinking Pelican Case numbers.

Digital Mode Audio Sucks.

All digital mode audio sucks. It is what it is. That it can do one particular thing, however, makes it kind of awesome at the same time. Please be sure to visit www.spectergear.com/ Your patronage there helps support this channel.

Yaesu FT-60 Operator Series - Part 5: Disabling Automatic Repeater Shift (ARS)
Thanks for this series- I just got my H3 and looking forward to learning- I'm an old FT60 guy9the big heavy one lol) and this seems amazing. My kids have GMRS only for camping and I wanted to do both GMRS with them and HAM on my own, so here I am- Thanks again-
Why did I waste so I much time watching other video on the H-3. This is just fantastic. - you are a fabulous teacher. Thanks so much for your hard work.
hello sir! how about the sound quality, does it have a little bit cracksound ?
Here in Canada there has been a pretty significant price drop on the IC-T10. As of today (Feb 8, 2025) it is selling for $199.99 Canadian ($139.86 USD) at Radio World in Toronto. That's what prompted me to go back and re-watch some of the reviews of the HT.
EXCELLENT SMITHERS 🙏
$43 on Amazon black or tan....eBay has them too $53 but you can get in green too
I like my Roger beep. If who I'm talking to doesn't, then bye....
EXCELLENT SMITHERS 🙏
I can't wait to get mine for the Howard's
"Bow" as in "bow to the emperor". Not "bay-oh". :)
Just ordered my first VX-6R with Mars Mod. These videos are going to be my main user manual. Great videos and very helpful! Thank you so much for making these.
Where’d you get it done with the mars mod?
@konnerrrr54 click on build a bundle and it's one of the options. It costs $35
2m/70cm version of the ailunce ha1g is being released shortly
Don't tell anybody, but I have an Ailunce HA1UV (the ham version of the HA1G) sitting right next to me. It's undergoing pre-review testing right now.
Yaesu VX6R is a great analog radio that's IP67 rated, magnesium case, AM and FM wide reception (including shortwave). Great radio and is my favorite all around unit. Can easily be MARS modified too. Only drawback on this radio for me is mediocre sized battery and not larger options on the market. It does have a 12V input for charging though which is awesome for those of us trying to employ more of an EMCOM system including solar charging 12V power sources. I use a small ammo can with LiFePo 20 Ah battery and is perfect for my VX6R.
My Ft65 that I've had just over a week doesn't show BANK, I get Band, +-1MHz to 5MHz and ALL... any suggestions?
You need to allocate memory channels to memory banks first. This video might be helpful - ua-cam.com/video/BHW5_3Wl5kI/v-deo.htmlsi=pooBhhs55bO-3Veh
Oh yeah going to btech after the baofeng mic was a big difference lol
O man. I am looking to purchase a new radio and have been doing my research for the last couple of days. Now you Sir tell me i have to wait another couple of days to maybe hear something from you that could influence my choice? :)))))) ah the patience needed...
Thanks for doing this. I'd JUST ordered the Wouxun to go with my 935G Plus and THEN searched for reviews (as I do way too often). Quickly cancelled the order in favor of the Commountain - and saved $10 to boot!
Quick service... Ordered several pouches Friday afternoon and arrived this Thursday morning.Thanks.
I'm excited for the next video on the HA1G , and the additional video you said you "might" do is the AR-152.
Good info, thank you sir. I'm looking to join the local HAM groups but would like to learn a little more before I do. I just don't know where to even start. Any recommendations?
Double tapping the comment about links for parts. As a newbie I’m having a hard time finding the bulkhead connectors
These are the ones that I use - www.amazon.com/DHT-Electronics-coaxial-adapter-female/dp/B00CX01IYM/ref=sr_1_14?crid=1OGKZYATVZX4G&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Zoiux9-Oekd4UyY9UzqzKuo8Y42t0WNRfnaXzdtXhSbC5Ksr_6GWDRYC3YRE7hj21zOM5tLARldfa9LPEAPnVcZ3p8mqIYHIeC7OxEVNrdda9y_ETnHqLFuZpGT0KByc-k5mjlrb98T3tcw_HTxuPq4mlNCtn_-duiwYW3IPNfrAEzBaen5j-xX-ETyMkUP_VcFG1L7QSVvYkNOY3dGRiPvG0iqXSJIhGJ3H9TA8zxk.fuyXHLA9X-3IpoDDx-dcmx8lBHPrX66L-BuM2_Xh4og&dib_tag=se&keywords=so-239+bulkhead+connector&qid=1738885187&sprefix=so-239+%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-14
@ thank you so much!
Hello Scott, I'm geting into the ham amateurs hobby i think its so cool... Whats the difference between the NA-701 & NA-701C? I live in Chicago if that helps or matters Thanks 😎
The NA-701 is tuned for the amateur radio service (Ham) bands. The NA-701C is tuned for commercial radio bands such as MURS and the business radio bands. For Ham usage the standard NA-701 is the best solution of the two.
I agree that this sort of grouping is less than ideal. You'll end up with a lot of redundant frequencies taking up channels if you want comprehensive scanning options on the fly. Fortunately, for me, 999 channels is still WAY more than I'll ever use, and 10 groups should be plenty. My Uniden BC125AT is the same way. The version I'm getting ("Plus") changed the terminology from "Bands" to "Areas", so I wonder if they'll behave more like actual banks on that unit. I'll know soon enough.
Great revisit. I have the Plus version showing up later today. I was looking for a GMRS for primary use that could also scan and receive other bands, and was built better than some of the other brands. I have some cheap hams and GMRS Bao/BTECHs boxed up in faraday'd storage for SHTF. I'm only GMRS licensed, so I wanted a decent purpose-built unit for daily use that I wouldn't be ashamed of in front of the other radio dorks 😃
thanks!👍
Disappointed, as a channel subscriber I tried to buy a pouch for my FT60, clicked buy with PayPal & found you only offer shipping within the USA at the checkout.
Contact the office at info@spectergear.com and they can process your order. Due to ITAR and other international shipment issues our website shopping cart does not allow for us to process international orders.
It seems you don't use powerpoles near as much as you could to make life easier. Powerpole on the charger eliminates some possible errors. Powerpole on your truck and your power box mean the charger just plugs in. When you need the clamps, you of course have a powerpole on them. Then you can use the clamps both to charge a battery or to take power from a battery. How many cig lighter adapters do you use at one time? I rarely use one, so I have a cig lighter to powerpole. I also have a cig outlet to powerpole. I don't have a powerpole to binding posts, but that would be easy enough. Instead I do have a few sets of powerpoles to just bare solid wire, and a selection of Wago connectors that I can connect bare wire to the powerpoles. Basically everything I get is tested then soon converted to powerpole. For example, I recently acquired a Milwaukee M18 battery charger that plugs into a cig lighter outlet. It's open on my bench. I'm going to replace the cig plug with a powerpole, and add a second powerpole in parallel to the battery terminals. No more dangly cord, and I can use it for its original purpose with any powerpole equipped source, plus I can use it to take power from the attached battery, plus I can use it to charge the M18 battery in a small power box without taking it out of the box and putting the battery onto the charger. I do use SB50 for things that might need more than 30amps continuous and for my normal 20amp and larger batteries and chargers. I use SB120 as my normal high-amperage connection. And I have made various adapters to go between those two and also to powerpoles. (I cannot believe Rigrunner and etc don't sell a powerpole distribution block that accepts an SB50...)
Yaesu ft60+Yaesu ft6r = Icom id10 Yes!!!
My vx6R cannot go to the murs freqs even though it was mars modded from HRO. What should I do?
I tried to order on for my Tidradio h8 but I couldn’t get P-Pal to work.
Love this simple setup, quick and effective. Could use the free space in the lid for a mic holder to keep it tidy, also, to keep it self reliant could you not mount a 12v battery (like for a fish finder) in with it?
Can you listen to local police an fire ems ect
Thank you for doing this. I got so tired of cheap mics that I took my older speaker-mics from the 1980s and put a modern K or M plugs on them. It’s nice to find some a few that would be plug and play.
Nice simple design. It also has the most important thing. It work for you! Thanks for the video! 73
I will express my unprofessional opinion. Maybe they gave me an extra station to keep in touch. It's not an event to set up the station in the necessary way.
If the TYT is like my Alinco, a standard RJ 12 (phone) cable works as a remote head cable, and Amazon has every length you may want for cheap!
Is this a radio set-up right out of the box? My radio only displays VFO and on the same Freq displayed on the video nowhere does it show TRS1 or TRSG1 and I set my radio to NORMAL mode which is 3.
Genasun seems to be the only charge controller that is RF quite on HF FYI
Always put a BNC adapter on HTs and use the BNC version of antennas. The Diamond RH77CA, the BNC version of the one in the video, is great. You’ll reduce wear and tear on the antenna connection, allows quick change, opportunities, and you’ll fill in the gaps, if any, at the antenna connection.
I got the abbree model work's great and great packaging.
Is the speaker mic of Motorola Gp 338 the same with the baofeng Uv9r+ ?
Looks like well made gear. Ordered a pouch for my kg-935g plus. I'm guessing it will fit my gmrs-pro as well since those radios are almost identical in size. 👍
It should fit in there just fine. Many thanks for your patronage.
I've tested a lot of handheld antennas from Tid, Abbree, Nagoya, Bing Fu, and others. I used both a VNA & a directional watt meter, the same way that you did. The two instruments generally gave results that were similar. The antennas were a real roll of the dice. Different ones worked in different frequency ranges. "identical" antennas proved to be very different sometimes. When I found stubbys that had a SWR below 3, I was able to get about a mile out of them at GMRS frequencies using a handheld with 4 watts of measured output. More than a few antennas from a variety of brands had SWR above 10 when testing within their specified frequency range. Even the mighty Nagoya was a little hit & miss sometimes. Bing Fu gave both the absolute worst & some of the best results. Their stubbies were not usable, but their 6" air band was actually good, while still being cheap. Build quality generally seems better on the higher priced antennas, but price does not guarantee proper tuning. The internal guts can be very different. A poorly built cheap antenna that is tuned correctly will work better than an expensive one that is not, but the cheap ones seem to not last as well. A meter is worth having if you are going to be buying antennas. What they are marked is not always what they actually are. The antennas that come with the radios age generally OK but not great. The best ones came in just over 1.1 which is spectacular.
Thanks 💙
I own this radio and want to really like it. I just wish Baofeng could make a radio that puts out a clean signal?
They do, the GT-5r.
Lmfao, I should have waited an extra week to order my pouch hahaha. Seriously though, it got delivered very quickly and PERFECTLY fits my TIDRADIO TD-H3. Now to go find a pouch for the H8 I just bought lol.
We make those too. And they are currently on sale. 🙂 Many Thanks for your patronage.
Nice rig, your videos are really good. I set up a little UV5R like this for work. I'm a first responder in SoCal and in our district we have an area people Hang glide and para glide, they have a freq that they use for comms. We get a few crashes every year it seems. I got the freq and programmed it into a spare UV5R I had and keep it on the outside of my backpack keypad locked on that Freq and showed the other shifts how to use it. I put a folding military style antenna in my backpack if needed. The HAM thing is cool, got my tech last spring. The Baofengs with Nagoyas have always treated me well but I recently got a Tidradio H3 and now I am looking at maybe a Yaesu FT-65r. Remember the Smith 642 or 637 in your pocket is better than the 1911 you left in the safe.
Great video, helped me a lot. One question if I may. Should I be able to transmit GMRS frequencies in normal mode.
I've built my go-box solution into a series of boxes, each a module filling a certain need. So far I've put together 3 boxes, a "radio" box(pelican style case ~ the size of a Apache4800), containing a G90 and a Kenwood TK-780(2m only); a 40Ah battery box(HF tactical ammo box), designed to output 20A for 2hrs which has a built in solar charge controller, and battery monitor; third is an antenna box(HF Voyager 18" toolcase), which I've already outgrown; and fourth, which is currently in flux, is a VHF digital box(form undecided, although the equipment is currently acting as an igate on my desk), designed to operate as a field APRS igate and beacon, with a 30w Kenwood TK-7180, a SignalinkUSB, and a laptop. The big goal with my system is to have things pre-set-up, so that I can simply drop the boxes on a bench, flip open the lids, and with a couple cables connecting them together, and a few minutes setting up antenna's I can be on the air. I did locate the power connectors for the radio box inside the box, with the mentality that I shouldn't be leaving power and antenna's connected when the radio's aren't in use.
You have such a great channel and deserve sooooo many more subs!!!
